Growing up, I was always the last one picked for sports. My lack of athleticism kept me discouraged for many years. It seemed as if I was unexceptional in everything, not just in sports. I used to always ask God why he made me so average. In middle school, I was invited by a friend to join the cross country team. I didn't want to join because I would be one of the worst athletes on the team, but I agreed to do it to meet new friends. My mile time at the end of 8th grade was only 7:35, but I was beginning to feel more confident about myself. I saw that running was something that I could work at. I knew God was right there with me, but I credited my improvements to my hard work and strong will alone. I was doing it for my glory. That mindset only took me so far. By the end of high school, I didn't want to run anymore. I stopped running for my entire freshman year of college, never intending to run again. I just wanted to experience life as a normal college student. One year later, I was in the worst shape of my life. I couldn't even run 8 minute miles. I was humbled. I was at my lowest, but I never felt better. God was with me, and he showed me that I couldn't do this without him. I decided to start training again, this time with the right mindset. Now I run for His glory. It's been almost 3 years since I started training again, and my growth has been monumental. While I did play a big part in getting this far through my hard work and determination, God played an even bigger part. I'm the train, but He's the engine that gives me strength to do what I do.
